Despite these looking like they belong on Dexter, they are anything but gruesome!
I was asked to bake a couple hundred red cupcakes for an red themed art exhibit and of course, I had to make a red velvet.
I’ve made cupcakes similar to these before but these are a lot more moist and yummy than the previous version!
Start as always, with the original recipe but add the dry ingredients all at once and skip the milk. Add 2 to 3 tbsp of unsweetened cocoa and A LOT of red food colouring. I prefer powder colouring when I use red, because to get a very vibrant red you need to add a lot of liquid or gel colouring and I’d rather use less - but there is absolutely nothing wrong with using whatever colouring you have at home. Right before baking, add 1/4 cup of boiling water and 2tsp of white vinegar (you could use a different kind of vinegar but they tend to leave a taste and it might be unpleasant to some). Bake as always.
For the frosting, I used lovely and tangy cream cheese frosting and for an extra dose of redness, I dusted them off with powdered food colouring. When it’s first dusted it looks like little freckles, but as it takes on the moisture from the frosting it looks like blood spatter and it is awesome!
